27"First let the children eat all they want," he told her, "for it is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to their dogs."
28"Yes, Lord," she replied, "but even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs."
29Then he told her, "For such a reply, you may go; the demon has left your daughter."
30She went home and found her child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.
mmmmmmmmm.kay......anything stand out at ya here? i have been battling with this bit of "in my face" for days now. i have cried about this because my insides hurt so bad over it. i have had some bits of understanding coming and going, but really i just want to see what others may have to say about it. so what do you think? did Jesus just call that woman a dog? haaaaaaaalp!

I can't even wrap my head around that..like you told me yesterday..perception maybe? He could be saying a lot of things there. It's all how you perceive it.
I have always taken this to be Jesus testing the woman. How far is she, a Greek woman, willing to humble herself to show her faith and have her child healed? She does in fact humble herself - "even the dogs eat the crumbs" - so Jesus takes pity on her and heals her child. There are other places in the gospels where Jesus tests petitioners before he grants want they ask.
There's some old child's prayer that calls Jesus "meek and mild". He wasn't, and he isn't. Often, when I read the gospels, it occurs to me that if I had been around in those days and met Jesus, he would have terrified me.
He still tests us, even today.
I read a commentary that it had to do with her ethnicity....the "dogs" he was referring to were Gentiles; He was saying that he came to the Jews first and they should get what was served--his ministry--first; he rewarded her faith even though she was not part of the Jewish people
You know that Jesus was the first women's libber, we have lots of baggage from the world that likes to mix that up.
